Sitting in a courtyard at The Carnegie Museum of Natural History for decades, the 18 ft long blue whale jawbone was an immediate inspiration to us when we came across it. With the blessings of the chief conservator at the museum, we carefully transported the jawbone to our wood shop, dried it using desiccants and "refinished" it using a museum quality resin. We fabricated custom brass strapping to prevent further crack propagation and fabricated a brass plate to fill a hole where a nerve once ran through the jawbone. The jawbone is cradled between sets of sandstone boulders that we shaped to the profile of the bone.
