FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF PITTSBURGH
Sixth Avenue Doors &
Tracery Restoration
As part of their commemoration of 250 years of congregation, Pittsburgh's landmark church engaged EngineHouse to repair and refinish their three historic 6th Avenue entryways. Dating from 1905, each features two exterior and two interior white oak doors and ornate tracery encasing gothic windows above.
Meticulously grain-matched patches were installed to eliminate areas of old damage, the joinery stabilized, and modern top/bottom pivot hinges with integrated hold-open fitted to the interior doors. The exterior doors were spot repaired and their hand forged hinges and hardware removed, cleaned, and repainted while the slabs were painstakingly stripped and refinished on site. Complex and delicate tracery above each entryway was carefully scraped and sanded back to raw wood before everything was stained to match existing woodwork and topcoated with Le Tonkinois No.1 Marine Varnish for a robust, maintainable exterior finish.
